Artist Statement
My current quilt series involves combining my love of collecting antique quilts and making modern quilts. The series is called “Baltimore goes Modern.” Baltimore album quilt blocks are modified using modern fabrics and colors to capture the spirit of a Baltimore block with an entirely modern look.
My previous art quilt series focused on the hardships that Japanese Americans faced when they were interned in camps during World War II. From 2002-2011 I collaborated with Margaret Chula, an internationally known haiku poet on this project.
The final focus of my time involves historical research on the quilts from the 19th century. This includes researching family genealogy, locating similar quilts, and reading family manuscripts and letters.
